Christmas Activities Near Cheshire
A short drive south from Cheshire, Alderford Lake in Whitchurch, Shropshire, offers a Christmas day out that is about as far from a shopping centre Santa as you can get. The experience here is outdoors, unhurried, and built around the lake itself: a boat ride to Santa’s island, a real ice rink, a woodland bar that drops to -12°C, a Drive-In Cinema, and real reindeer included with every booking.
The Christmas season at Alderford runs 27 November to 23 December 2026. From most of Cheshire you are looking at around 35 to 50 minutes by car.
Santa Island Experience
The Santa Island Experience is the main event of the Alderford Christmas season. Your family boards a boat and crosses the lake to Santa’s island, where a 90-minute experience of elves, toasted s’mores, a wishing bridge, a toy workshop, letter writing and a grotto meeting with Santa awaits. Every child receives a gift from Santa. The Elf Bar serves hot chocolate for children and festive drinks for adults throughout.
The outdoor setting, the boat crossing and the unhurried pace make this a very different type of Santa experience. There are no indoor queues and no rushed photo-and-move-on grotto visits.
Tickets from £45 to £58 per person, depending on your date and session time. Under-1s are free. A personalised invitation from Santa can be added for £5. Buoyancy aids are provided on the boat. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your session. Book your Santa Island Experience online.
Accessibility: adapted boat available for wheelchair and mobility scooter users. Email enquiries@alderford.com.
Real Ice Skating
Alderford’s ice rink uses real ice and is mostly undercover. Sessions last around 50 minutes. Polar bear skating aids are available for beginners. The rink suits all ages and can be booked alongside the Santa experience for a full day at the lake. Special event nights: K-Pop Ice Party (5 and 19 December), SEN Relaxed Session (29 November and 12 December), Nashville on Ice (11 December), adults-only Rave Skate (18 December). These nights book up quickly.
Woodland Ice Bar
Hidden in the woods at Alderford, the Woodland Ice Bar is one of the most memorable stops on a Christmas day at the lake. Temperatures inside drop to around -12°C. The bar, the sculptures and the glasses are all made from ice. Your 20-minute session includes an ice luge shot and a glass of mulled wine. Non-alcoholic options are available. Children aged 4 and over are welcome with a ticket and an adult.
Christmas Drive-In Cinema
The Christmas Drive-In Cinema screens two films this December: The Holiday on Friday 11 December and Home Alone on Sunday 13 December. Watch from your car or bring blankets, with the Shropshire countryside around you.
Meet the Reindeer
Henry and Hector, Alderford’s resident reindeer, are included with every Christmas activity booking. They are real reindeer, and meeting them tends to be a highlight for younger visitors.
